Why are atheists in the Religion & Spirituality area, when they have no Religion or Spirituality?
Published by: mike 2010-03-15
  • Why bother -- they are so small in number - nevertheless - of course they have religion and spirituality -- it is built in -- we are wired as spiritual beings - these benighted folk are largely rejecting "organized" religion on the basis of the people they have experienced as alledged practitioners - and being disillusioned by same, have rejected the whole business without serious examiniation - a few can articulate a philosophy of existence that coheres, but very few.

  • Well, if they beleive in nothing they are making a choice to believe in something. So in a way they have a religious and spiritual view-it's just not the norm of people in this sort of group. On the other hand they could be specifically coming into a religious and spiritual area in order to challenge and in some cases aggrivate religious and spiritual people.

  • To actually discuss the topics in an educated manner - since the vast majority of atheists were Christian, did read their bibles, or are equally well educated by studying religions.

there are many kinds of spirituality - just because YOU don't understand it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

    Nice try.

  • How do you know we have no religion or spirituality? There are atheistic religions, and spirituality requires neither religion nor belief in gods.

Furthermore one need be neither spiritual nor religious to discuss religion and spirituality. Does one need to be a cat to discuss cats, or a musician to discuss music?

If you want a Christian-only echo chamber go Google one of them and join one.

  • We're discussing religion and spirituality!

    Yay! Drink!

  • Bartender, give me a scotch, a back up scotch and a boiler scotch, that's a shot of scotch floating in a bigger glass of scotch, now scotch me scotch face!

    *DRINK*

  • To fight the good fight against the infidels! This is why there are no more atheists in the world. We saw that it was a problem that had to be eradicated.

  • Wrong on both counts. Atheists can have both spirituality and religion. Even those who don't have opinions on the subject. Also, as members of a society steeped in religion, our lives are impacted by religionists.
Finally, I get to open that vignole I've been saving! *sip*

  • I believe if atheists had their way, they (we) would be in some sort of philosophy section.

There are countless theists that argue atheism requires faith, which would naturally bring the subject of atheism to the Spirituality section of this site. Atheists reject this claim, noting that individuals are born without belief and, in order to accept a deity, must be introduced to a belief system which invariably requires faith.

For many (most?) believers, the idea of a god has been so ingrained into their worldview that all ideas are seen in relation to what they consider to be "default"; that is, the notion that a god naturally exists. When arguing from this position, it is natural to argue that faith is needed to reject it. The theist's argument in this situation is fallacious for a number of reasons.

  • Why do you assume we have no Religion & Spirituality?

    Do you argue from ignorance?

  • It is incorrect to say that someone who is atheist is not spiritual. It's just a belief that there is no god. But one can believe in the spirit of people and believe that there are wrong and right way in which to live and behave towards other people. Not everyone in the world believe in the same type of religions that the Judeo-Christian theories hold.

  • I am here because you keep asking me questions and to:

    1. Counteract the damage you do to my society: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4fQA9mt-...

    2. Educate cretinists: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nj587d5i...

    3. Give you a target for your rants: http://youtube.com/watch?v=RsBZCq4hp14

    4. Laugh heartily at your, ahem, logic.

    5. Remind you to use the Search function.

  • Because it's a free country and I'll do what I want!

And just because I'm not religious doesn't mean I'm not interested in discussing religion or that I can't be spiritual!

Everybody sing! ... 'He's an asshole, he's an asshole!'

  • try this in that respect.......the Thesis and the antithesis come together to make....synthesis

    ****CHUG..pint of Absolut****

  • I have met several spiritual atheists, and why can't they discuss religion? Religion impacts everyone's lives regardless of what your beliefs are.

  • Where else they fit into? Are those people that negate the existence of a Higher power are the same that are discussing or questioning " what was first the chicken or the egg?.

  • When did you decide I don't have spirituality?
My spiritual questions are as valid as anyone's.

  • Because Atheism is a philosophy regarding religion.

Shall we drink? Oh, yes, we shall!

  • *drink*

Does our way of thinking scare you? Enough for you to want us to disappear? That doesn't mean our way of thinking will go away.

  • *drinks* to answer questions like this one.

  • i do have spirituality and religion makes me laugh.

  • Buddhists are technically atheists and Buddhism is a religion.

I am so glad the Christian definition of something is not always the accepted one.

  • I am a Christian on here a lot and this question is asked a lot. Go to the above 'search for questions' box to find more answers to this.

  • While its true we lack religion and spirituality we are still discussing it, something that all are capable of, even those with out religion.

    The Bard~

  • Maybe it's because Atheism is like a religion of it's own, and has evangelists. I'm all for open debate, but I can't guarantee that I will respect an opinion that is based on lies.

  • What better place for them? If we as people who do have a spiritual make up are secure in our system of believe and yet open minded enough to hear others opinions and views, then all have the potential to learn and grow from each other. I enjoy discussion spirituality, the concept of God, etc with atheists. : )

  • Buddhism is an atheist religion, and they are quite spiritual...

    Intolerant much?

  • im reminded of a song..

  • *drink*

What, Christians can't play atheist drinking games?

I find repetetive questions annoying too, lol.

  • Atheists are not here. Atheist means "no god".

Anti theists are here. They wish to prove a point or demonstrate the danger of theism.

Any person claiming to be atheistic should be asked a simple question: "Why do you rail so?"

No, they are not atheists. They are anti god, they are anti Christ.

  • Because our eyes are open, and our brains work, and we laugh heartily at your superstitious silliness!
